Amy Peters Wood Maine Artist

STATEMENT

" Using the ancient medium of egg tempera, my process is not unlike the ancient technique of "writing" religious icons. For me, spirituality comes from a deep reverence for the natural world. My artwork gets tugged, pulled and twisted from multiple vantage points and timeframes, depicting the continuous intersection between nature, humanity and our perceived experiences.

A lifelong fascination with lichens, where three separate entities- an alga, yeast and fungus live in symbiosis to create a larger more interesting organism, feature in various forms in my paintings. Nature's repetitious use of fractal patterns provide an underlying scaffold from which I build larger scenes, while chaos and chance breakdown into stylized renderings of ideas or emotions.

My art celebrates the coexistence and union, humanity is beginning to embrace, of nature and the earth’s wild areas, and a world where everything and everyone, is equal."
